State Legislature to Increase Education Spending

Florida public school spending would increase by about $457 per student, according to a tentative agreement House and Senate negotiators reached Sunday. The remaining money can be used to give teachers across-the-board pay raises, which many school officials believe should come before merit pay. Lawmakers had scrapped the STAR pay program that they passed last year. The new more flexible Merit Award Program, which has been endorsed by the union and associations representing school boards and superintendents. Details to Come.
