Cases of hamburger patties and meatballs in schools across South
The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday recalled 143 million pounds of beef from the Westland/Hallmark Meat Co., in Chino, Calif. The company, which provides meat to public schools nationwide, has been under investigation since Jan. 30, when animal rights activists accused it of mistreating cattle and illegally distributing meat from animals too sick to stand.

School cafeterias in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties pulled meat entrees from lunch menus after the federal government closed the California slaughterhouse that provides meat to public schools throughout the country.
School district officials in all three South Florida counties asked food managers to place the suspect ground beef "on hold" to determine if it came from the Hallmark/Westland Meat Co., which is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In order to help ensure a safe environment, all YMCA morning students will now be assigned to room 70 and the cafeteria and the remainder of the building will be locked until breakfast begins at 7:45 a.m. on school days. Please see me if special arrangements need to be made.
As we begin the 2008 Calendar Year, allow me to thank the many of you who drop off and pick up your students in the cafeteria at the correct times.
Please review with your students the seating arrangements and line order that you established for them in the cafeteria, so we may help make these last three days operate as smooth as possible.
Due to health, safety and privacy guidelines, we must request that all staff use the clinic primarily for its intended purpose.
Please refrain from eating in that area and consider an alternative location, such as the nearby staff lounge.
If you need to review any files or documents for extended periods of time, please consider utilizing a different location in the main office or conference room.

Beginning today, we will utilize our rainy day morning procedures on a trial basis for all occasions.
Students in grades 3-5 will remain between the two wings on the south side of the building, while students in grade 2 will remain in the cafeteria and all other children will wait for their teacher in front of the classroom door.
Please make sure to review your evacuation routes on a routine basis. For preparation purposes, we have two fire drills in August and at least one drill every month thereafter.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- When it comes to preparing for emergencies, the nation's schools could be getting better grades.
While most school districts have plans for dealing with emergencies such as terrorist attacks, hurricanes or flu pandemics, those plans often fall short of what is needed, according to an analysis by the congressional Government Accountability Office.
50% of school districts don't have plans for continuing to educate students in the event of a lengthy school closure.
28% of school districts with emergency plans do not have specific provisions for evacuating students with disabilities in an emergency.
70% of school districts reported a lack of expertise and equipment, such as two-way radios and adequate locks for school buildings, as impediments to emergency planning.
WESTON · Hundreds of Cypress Bay High students stayed home from school Friday amid rumors about a hit list and a bomb threat. A 10th-grade student had been suspended from school three weeks ago after he turned in a paper to an English teacher that raised "red flags" to school administration.

- District safety inspectors have reported that many classrooms contain refrigerators, portable heaters, coffee makers, toasters, microwave ovens and other personal electrical appliances
- Many electrical appliances are plugged into extension cords or outlets not designed for these loads (fire safety deficiency)
- Electrical appliances may not be well maintained and could pose a potential fire and/or shock hazard
- Storing and preparing food throughout school buildings increases the potential for pests and their resulting health and sanitation concerns
- Teachers and staff should utilize appliances located in designated areas (Teacher's Lounge) for storing and cooking food.
