Senate Panel Votes to Kill Funds for 'Reading First'

Source: Education Week; June 24, 2008

A Senate Appropriations subcommittee voted to eliminate all funding for the Reading First program, as part of a fiscal 2009 spending bill that would provide modest increases for other education programs.

In explaining his panel's decision to zero out the program, the panel cited the results of a preliminary federal evaluation of Reading First, released May 1, which found that the program has had no impact...

The winter DIBELS Assessment will begin on Thursday, January 24. This assessment will be done by the SAME person that tested your class previously. The following areas will be covered this time.

Kindergarten LNF, ISF, PSF, and NWF
First Grade PSF, NWF, ORF
Second Grade NWF and ORF
Third Grade ORF
Fourth Grade ORF
Fifth Grade ORF

Bob and Otto Contest

Ms. Joyce Sweeting's 1st grade class was selected as WLRN's 2007 One Picture Book, One Community Class Picture Book Contest winner! On Thursday, November 8th at 9:00 a.m., the book's illustrator will read the book to the students and have a short question answer for the group.

Reading Update (Grades 3-5)

Benchmark Skills of the Week:
Continue working on the following benchmark items during your daily
instruction:
- Main Idea/Details
- Author's Purpose
- Cause and Effect
- Vocabulary
* Refer to the vocabulary task card in reference to multiple meaning words.
FCAT Writing Benchmark Focus:
- Ms. Carter will continue to pull all fourth graders for writing instruction.
- Fourth grade students will take an expository writing assessment on
Tuesday.
FCAT Reading Benchmark Focus:
- Follow Grade Level "Instructional Focus Calendar" based on Houghton
Mifflin series Theme 2
Date(s) to Remember:
- Reading PLUS - All students must utilize the computer
based reading program twice a week for 30 minutes a day.
- Accelerated Reader - Teachers, make sure that all of your students are
visiting the media center and are taking AR test daily. All students must
read and take 10 AR test by October 25.
- Expository Writing Assessment - Teachers, please place your scores in
my mailbox by Friday, October 19, 2007.

Early Reading First Program

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A federal program designed to give preschoolers a boost in early reading got a mixed report card Monday.
The Early Reading First Program has had a positive effect on children's print and letter knowledge, according to a report released by the Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences. But the study also found the program has had no impact on phonological awareness, which includes rhyming, or oral language, which includes vocabulary development. The program has led to more professional development for teachers, according to the study.
Early Reading
