The Miami-Dade County Public School District will now be posting its checkbook register online.

The website -- http://checkregister.dadeschools.net/ -- was the brainchild of School Board member Marta Perez. She proposed the idea in May as a way to increase transparency in government.

''Taxpayers are entitled to view how their tax dollars are being spent,'' she wrote in a prepared statement. Visitors to the site can search by vendor and sort by name and amount paid. The district has also set up an e-mail address to field public inquiries about the information.

The Miami-Dade school system is the first district in the state to post its financial records online, Perez said.
